Best-in-class Video-on-Demand App

Viacom18, a joint venture between Viacom and the Network 18 Group, is one of India's fastest growing entertainment networks. Voot is a video-on-demand app from Viacom18, aimed at the always-on digital generation. Robosoft was one among the five global partners chosen by Viacom18 to build the app. The app has 17,000 hours of video content including archived content from the network's broadcast library, content acquired from independent producers in India and abroad, Voot exclusives and Voot originals. The content is aimed at audiences with varying choices and preferences.

Apart from this, Voot also offers close to 7000 videos across 80 animated characters suitable for consumption by children between three and ten years. This includes not only Viacom18’s popular characters like Motu-Patlu, Dora and Shiva, but also characters that are on other networks on TV.

Client need

Viacom18 wanted to enter the VOD platform, which would hold its entire content library only on the app. The content powerhouse also aimed at curating the largest repository of kids' content as well as creating original exclusive to the app.

To be able to achieve this, they chose to work with different partners who were domain leaders in their respective areas of specialisation. BCG (Boston Consulting Group) was chosen to help define the strategy for the app and work closely with the Viacom18 team for the same.
Viacom18 partnered with OTT solution provider Kaltura for video streaming, A Different Engine (ADE) for building its UI-UX, WebDunia for website development and web services APIs. And to develop mobile applications on iOS and Android, Viacom18 partnered with Robosoft.


Our major challenge was to stitch various engineering processes at work under the hood, the huge pipeline of videos and package it all into an easy to use native app for both iOS and Android. As it was a project with various specialists on board we had to work side by side to ensure a glitch-free, delightful customer experience.
